Lightbulb Moving to the US from Canada to work

I'm a Canadian citizen and I'm moving to San Fransisco to live with my American boyfriend. He is employed. I would ideally like to get a work permit to work in the US, but I'm not sure if I should try to apply for one before I leave Canada (without a job offer) or move first and try to find an employer to sponsor me. we have enough money for me to take a little time to volunteer somewhere first, and I have a college degree, which (I hope) might help. Can anyone give me any advice on what to do? I know I can only stay for 3 months at a time, which won't be a problem since I will be going back and forth to Canada for the next few months anyway.

Should I try to get a work permit? Green card? Student visa and take classes somewhere? Or none of the above, and just try to get a job when I get there?
