    Gift tax for household members

Suppose, for a minute, that I take a friend into my home, commitment free, until he can get himself back on his feet. I'll even claim him as a dependent on my tax return.

Would I have to pay a gift tax on the fair market value of the rent, food, utilities, etc. that I provide for him?

I'm not sure, but that doesn't seem necessary. I can't imagine that in any other situation where someone has a dependent that they have to pay a gift tax.
