Can landlord charge more than full year's lease if lease is broken?
I broke my apartment lease 2 months early to buy a house, and gave the landlord notice. There is a clause in the contract that says I'm responsible for the remainder of the lease or until the apartment is re-rented. Also, if it's re-rented they charge a fee equal to 1 month's rent.
Now, they claim the apartment was re-rented immediately after my lease ended, but because the new tenant signed the contract during my lease, they're charging the full 2 month's rent PLUS the 1 month fee. So now I'm getting charged more than the full remainder of the lease for leaving early. Can they do this?

No
There is no way they can charge you for an amount over the rent for the remainder of your rental lease agreement.
If I were you, I wouldn't pay any of it and let them take me to court. You SHOULD be prepared to pay what you owe (the rent up until the day the new tenant took possession), but it sounds like they are trying to milk you and you will find that a judge in most cases will be tenant favorable if you can present yourself in a professional manner and SHOW evidence of what you posted in this forum.
