Hi there, I'm new to this site and was hoping I could find some help here!
Also, I am in Canada, so hopefully any Canadian lawyers out there?
I can't afford a lawyer, or don't even know if I need one for a case such as this, but there was an international student who lived in my house in 2006 for a year with a homestay agreement of $1000 CAD per month. He left without paying 2 months pay and after weeks of chasing him down I was able to get a cheque he gave me before he fled the country. I cashed it in and it bounced, and I got an insufficient funds charge of $40 so he is now sitting at $2040 in owing me. After trying to find him through his family and other friends I have heard that he is back and attending college here (still an international student) and although most homestays don't do written agreements, I heard that our verbal agreement can also serve as a contract (I have many many people to prove that we agreed to the service). So the main question is, where do I start? Since he's an international student, can he get kicked out of Canada? After almost 2 years of trusting him I am now fed up with waiting. I was also wondering if I could get anything out of this for all the work and long distance calls in trying to reach him? This is getting way out of hand, and I am positive his family thinks they can walk away from this scott free.
