Student Loan and Family Disagreement
Hello, I may have a unique situation and I would appreciate some clarity.
There has been some disagreement over how a student loan should be handled, between myself and my father.
The essentials are, I went to a year of college, and then later decided not to return to that college.
The student loan kicked in and my father stated he was not going to pay the loan.
The student loan is in his name, and he thinks I owe him money for it.
Prior to going to college, I do not recall agreeing to be responsible for the student loan, in fact, when I asked my mother, she told me 'not to worry about it.'
So my question is, am I liable for the loan? Can he sue me for payment of the loan?
If you need extra details let me know.
The loan is in VT.

I think that was very difficult because as you have said the name is on your father and you cannot get it unless he didn't transfer to you but the good news there is he is responsible to pay it.

this is very different type of situation because you are not responsible to pay it, your father is reaponsible to it, but your father is also responsible to give money to you. so you are totally safe in this case.

Student loans are typically some of the hardest to discharge, generally they always must be paid back.

Your father is legally responsible for the debt. If you had an agreement with him that you would pay it back, he may be able to collect from you, but there would need to be evidence of a contract and it would need to resolved in court (if you can't agree). However, you might consider working this out with him in some way, rather than be in a legal dispute with your father.
