Car Accident

So I have no clue what to do. I am a poor broke college student. Heres the story.

I was unaware I did not have insurance and I got into an accident. At the time of the accident I was still unaware. I call my insurance company I file I claim. So the next day I get a call from my insurance company Mercury saying I didnt pay my payment (Which I was unaware they sent me a renewal) and that they are not going to cover me. So at that point I was thinking I was screwed. So I called the loan company for the car which is DCU. I call them And I go through a long process of getting everything they need. They call me this morning and tell me its not going to be covered since I am not the registered owner and their insurance only covers them. The registered owner is my sister. She is fully aware of this situation. Is there anything I can do? Or am I just royally screwed? I just recently moved to this new location. Maybe their renewal got sent to my old address?

What do you mean if my sister can claim the amount?
