Lawsuits and real estate I need to find out if anyone knows which states I could buy a home in which would not be taken from me due to a law suit against my name.
I allowed my ex-boyfriend to start a business under my name. The business did not succeed for reasons due to a contract issue by a customer who entered into the contract knowing they did not have the money to follow through with the contract. This person then began a smear campaign against the company and made phone calls to another client that instigated the law suit.
The client that sued was a customer of someone my ex had hired and made a partner (he also bled the account). This was his job, he wrote the contract himself and signed his name to it, only to take another job with another company in the middle of the job. The client was very upset - first by the partner not taking calls and not telling her he was not going to complete the job himself, and second by speaking with the other client which I believe was doing whatever she could to make us break the contract with her, since she entered into the contract without enough funds.
My ex did everything possible to try to appease and correct the situation with
his partners customer. Even though all the work was completed for the money she had paid on her contract, there was no dealing with her. She actually fired my ex 4 times within a week while trying to work this out. Finally he told her he partner had quit and it was impossible for him to work things out with her and the last time she fired him was final.
I had never spoken with the client or had any dealings with her job. I had my own career to work on. I had pleaded with my ex to put the company in his name when he took on his partner (I did everything I could to make him see what the partner was doing to no avail), he asked my to give him 3 months before pulling my name from the business. Since there were contracts that were still ongoing, I left my name on the business. BIG MISTAKE!
The firing customer sued for uncompleted work and was awarded $78,000 against me and the partner. My ex walked away free.
During the time the lawsuit took, I sold my house and moved to another state. There is not much money from the sale, but I don't want to waste it all on rent. I have heard in Florida you will not lose your house due to a lawsuit or bankruptcy. Are there any other states where I can buy a house without having a lien placed against the home, be forced to sell to either pay the lawsuit or lose it bankruptcy?
Thank you for looking at my situation, any responses would help tremendously.

Lawsuits and real estate
hi,
Commercial real estate owners are frequent targets of lawsuits. Typically, these are lawsuits arising from their real estate operations, such as lender actions for default. Owners may also be exposed to risks unrelated to their real estate, like an auto accident.

Real estate is dramatically affected by the condition of the immediate area where the property is located. With the exception of a global recession, real estate is affected primarily by local factors.
