Hiring a reputable and competent lawyer IS the best way to handle bankruptcy, however not everyone can afford to do so. Many people do file pro se (on their own), but this process is difficult and stressful. There are agencies that offer free or discounted legal help, but they are very busy. Look in your area for Legal Aid or some other free service. Otherwise lawyers generally charge flat fees for bankruptcy. There is no contingency fee arrangement.

All depends on your debt levels and income .
No way for us to tell , but generally if your debts exceed your income , you are considered bankrupt .
They now mandate money management classes so people do NOT get into excess debt again .
Google bankruptcy on the web and look for Nolo press .

The new law is much more complicated than before. It was designed to deter people from walking away from their debts. If you are facing personal bankruptcy then there are two chapters which might apply: chapter 7 and chapter 13. Which one would be best depends on your cirumstances - your income, your debts, etc. etc.
Do yourself a favor and research the subject before you make a move. It really is a last resort and there could be alternatives. This website has a lot of information, useful links etc.
Good luck!

First, is your business and must be paid for their skill. But it is illegal for a lawyer to make a bankruptcy law. The lawyer must prove to the court, proof of payment for services made to the Court before the case can go forward. Do not cancel the deposit and subject to legal penalties.
