abandoning a car (consequences?)
Hello,
sorry, i think i should have posted this in the traffic law forum, and I don't know how to dlete or move posts, sorry!
I had a blowout and wrecked my car and left it in the road. The car hit a curb and the airbags deployed, only my car was damaged. It was totaled, as it was a very cheap car and was taken to impound. I walked home and called the police the next day. They said that I have to appear and speak to an investigator to release the car because it was blocking traffic and left there.
Since the car is totaled, I don't want to deal with it. Are there any consequences if I don't show up to talk to the police? I wasn't doing anything illegal, except leaving the car. Will they send me a ticket, issue a warrant etc if I just forget about the car? I'd prefer to just leave it and not incur any more expense.
Thanks

Hi
I have not heard anybody that was send to prison because of abandoning his totally wrecked car. You have mentioned it has been impounded so it holds no threat to the safety of other people and its properties. Just to be sure you may ask a lawyer about it. There are free sites that has an online staff to answer you.

I guess my concern is that the police will think I was doing something wrong, and that is why I just left the car there and further investigate. I left the car there and it was impounded, I didn't call that night, so I'm wondering if that makes a difference. Should I expect to receive a citation for blocking traffic at least, because I didn't have it towed, they had to have it impounded? Or are the police very unlikely to pursue it any further?
Also, if I never go to get the car, can I still be held accountable for the impound fees?
Thanks!

Yes, you can be held accountable for the impound fees due to the nature that the vehicle is registered to you so you are held accountable for any tickets or fees given to the vehicle.

Abandoned SUV
A Officer with the California Highway Patrol was killed in the line of duty on June 27, 2010. Officer responded to a report that a vehicle had hit a tree on South River Road in Paso Robles. After investigating, he determined that no accident had occurred and that the vehicle was abandoned. He called for a tow truck and was waiting next to his patrol car, when a passing vehicle crossed the double yellow lines and struck the patrol car. The force of the impact pushed the patrol car into Officer.
